Gravestone of Aurelio Chigi, by Ascanio da Cortona

This gravestone was destined to the sepulchre of Aurelio Chigi, founder of Conservatorio del Refugio. According to the epigraph, the young noblewomen of the Refugio dedicated the gravestone to him. The rectangular white marble stone is inside a larger grey marble frame. The epigraph reads: AURELIO CHIGIO / VIRO RELIGIOSISS(imo) / ET FUNDAT(ore) B M / HUIUS CONGREG(ationem) VIRGINES / APUD QUAS V ID MAII / OBDORMIVIT IN DOMINO / PERENNE MONUMEN(TUM) / CORPORIS VIRTUTUM / AC BENEFICIOR POSUERE / A(nno) S(alutis) MDCXI.
